Kacey Musgraves Honors Dolly Parton with ‘Here You Come Again’ Cover and Emotional ‘Rainbow’ Tribute During Boston Show

Singer also dedicated “Rainbow” to the late country icon, revealing that Parton was the inspiration behind the song

Kacey Musgraves delivered a heartfelt tribute to Dolly Parton during her Boston concert on Friday, covering the legendary artist’s 1977 hit “Here You Come Again” and reviving her own ballad “Rainbow” in Parton’s honor.

Musgraves had not performed “Rainbow” from her acclaimed album Golden Hour during her current Middle of Nowhere Tour, but she brought the song back to the setlist specifically to commemorate Parton, who passed away on Monday at the age of 80. Addressing the crowd at TD Garden, Musgraves shared that the country music icon had been the original inspiration behind the track.

“Let’s all sing this together for her memory,” Musgraves told the audience as images of Parton were displayed on the venue’s screens:

Following the emotional performance of “Rainbow,” Musgraves transitioned into Parton’s crossover hit “Here You Come Again,” the 1977 single that helped establish Parton’s success beyond traditional country music audiences.

The pairing of “Rainbow” and “Here You Come Again” carried additional significance, referencing the 2019 Grammy Awards ceremony where Musgraves performed “Rainbow” during Music’s Biggest Night before being joined onstage by Parton and Katy Perry for a collaborative rendition of “Here You Come Again.” Later that same weekend, Musgraves and Perry also performed the song during the MusiCares tribute event honoring Parton.

“The world feels a lot less sparkly all of a sudden,” Musgraves wrote on social media earlier this week. “Dolly. This really really hurts. So glad she’s with her Carl Dean.”
