Tom Cruise Revives ‘Days of Thunder’ With Anne Hathaway for Summer 2028 Theatrical Release

Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed the sequel to the 1990 racing classic, with production scheduled to begin after Anne Hathaway’s current pregnancy.

Tom Cruise is set to return as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in the upcoming follow-up, with Anne Hathaway joining the cast as a team owner and engineer. The announcement was made Saturday at Daytona International Speedway, home of the Daytona 500, where a lime green NASCAR was displayed promoting a Summer 2028 release.

“I’m gonna have this baby, then we’re gonna make this movie,” Hathaway joked in the announcement video, confirming the production timeline.

“Tom Cruise will return as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle and will be joined by Anne Hathaway who is set to play a team owner and engineer in the upcoming follow-up to the groundbreaking 1990 film that revolutionized cinema. Cruise will star and produce alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. Jonathan Levine is set to direct from a script by Will Staples.”

The sequel will be shot in IMAX and released exclusively in theaters on June 2, 2028, with additional premium formats including Dolby Cinema and 4DX, according to Variety.

Days of Thunder marks the second iconic franchise Cruise has revisited decades later, following the critical and commercial success of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022—36 years after the original Top Gun premiered in 1986. Similarly, 38 years will separate the two Days of Thunder installments. Beyond this project and the forthcoming Digger, Cruise is also developing a third Top Gun film.
