ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, Group 2, Southampton

New Zealand 150-6 (20 overs): Becomes 45 (30); Dilhari 2-35

Sri Lanka 153-5 (19.4 overs): De Silva 54* (37); Patel 2-23

Sri Lanka won by five wickets

New Zealand’s hopes of defending their Women’s T20 World Cup title are on the brink after a shock five‑wicket defeat by Sri Lanka in Southampton.

Both teams were under pressure to win after early losses, and the Sri Lankan side displayed composure, achieving the target of 151 with two balls to spare.

Fielding errors again proved costly for New Zealand. Following a series of dropped catches in their opening match, they surrendered three additional chances in this game, including a crucial miss by Bree Illing that negated a potential match‑winning wicket of Nilakshi de Silva.

Fast bowler Illing stopped a simple opportunity at short fine leg during Melie Kerr’s spell, and de Silva capitalised, finishing unbeaten on 54 from 37 deliveries.

After Sri Lanka’s top order faltered to 55-4, de Silva forged a vital partnership of 50 with Kaveesha Dilhari before Dilhari was run out, leaving 46 required from 30 balls.

Despite limited batting depth, the match remained in contention, with de Silva receiving support from Kaushani Nuthyangana, who scored 24 not out to see Sri Lanka over the line.

The White Ferns struggled in the field and adopted a cautious approach with the bat, falling to 38-1 during the powerplay before captain Kerr and Sophie Devine steered them to 150-6, 45 each.

Following consecutive defeats in the final overs, New Zealand faces a group‑stage exit, despite being pre‑tournament favourites together with England for a top‑two finish. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, remains in contention after a heavy opening loss to the hosts.
