Neymar’s Future at Santos Uncertain Following Heated Dressing Room Altercation

Neymar has returned to Santos following Brazil’s 2026 World Cup campaign, but his long-term tenure with The Fish is once again facing uncertainty. Following reports of a volatile locker-room confrontation involving young teammates Gabriel Bontempo and Joao Ananias, serious questions have surfaced regarding his future at the club.

In the days preceding his return to competition, Neymar drew scrutiny by attending the BSOP Winter poker tournament—the fourth leg of the 2026 Brazilian Poker Championship—while Santos was in Venezuela to face UCV in the Copa Sudamericana. Although the Brazilian superstar defended his decision against public criticism, the incident reportedly caused friction among his teammates.

According to the Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, tensions escalated during Saturday’s match against Chapecoense, as Neymar reportedly berated Bontempo and Ananias in the dressing room following a frustrating draw. His conduct during halftime and after the final whistle at Vila Belmiro has reportedly caused frustration among players, coaching staff, and Santos executives.

The match initially showed promise for Santos, with Neymar opening the scoring in the 36th minute following a precise team buildup, celebrating with a gesture mimicking a poker card dealer. However, Santos suffered a collapse early in the second half, conceding two goals within a 10-minute window before Neymar salvaged a point late in the game via a penalty conversion.

According to Globo Esporte, Neymar was notably harsh when criticizing midfielder Bontempo and center-back Ananias, specifically questioning the ability of the young defender who was involved in the second-half defensive collapse.

Representatives for Bontempo have downplayed the conflict, characterizing it as a standard halftime reprimand rather than a personal attack. Ananias also issued a statement denying any direct confrontation, though he did confirm that a collective reprimand took place. This incident follows a recent training ground physical altercation where Neymar slapped teammate Robinho Jr., an event for which the former Barcelona star later issued a public apology.

Strained Relations at Santos

Neymar’s return to Santos in February 2025 was envisioned as a mutually beneficial move: the striker would maintain match fitness for Brazil’s 2026 World Cup, while the club would benefit from significant sponsorship and star power. However, the partnership has been marked by instability and mutual dissatisfaction.

Santos management has expressed unhappiness with Neymar’s leadership style and his interactions with younger squad members. This tension was heightened by his appearance at the poker tournament on the same night Santos began its South American cup fixture.

Conversely, Neymar has expressed dissatisfaction with the club’s infrastructure and a perceived lack of media protection at the CT Rei Pele training facility. Despite his personal financial contributions toward facility upgrades, Neymar and his father have publicly questioned the quality of the squad as the club struggles through its second consecutive relegation battle.

Compounding the issues, Globo Esporte reports that Santos owes Neymar in excess of R$ 90 million ($17.5M USD), having fallen up to three months behind on image-rights payments this year. With the 34-year-old under contract until late 2026, a contract extension is currently viewed as unlikely by both parties.
