During the preseason finale, the Minnesota Vikings released outside linebacker Kenny Dyson following an injury settlement. A week later, the team attempted to add him to the practice squad, but the NFL prohibited the move.
The league’s rule barring re‑signing of injured players nullified the practice‑squad deal, stipulating that a player who is waived under an injury settlement cannot return to the same club until the settlement period plus an additional three weeks has elapsed.
For example, if the undisclosed settlement amounted to four weeks of pay, the Vikings would be barred from reacquiring him until at least seven weeks into the season. Dyson remains free to sign with any other franchise during that interval.
Injury settlements offer advantages for both parties. The club avoids placing the player on injured reserve and the associated season‑long salary obligation, while the player secures immediate compensation and retains the possibility of playing later in the year.
Dyson could still find a roster spot this season. He is eligible to sign with any team at any point before the Vikings’ re‑signing window opens, or he may rejoin Minnesota once that period begins.
