The opening weekend has concluded, but the injury fallout continues to unfold as teams address the physical toll of Week 1.
The Philadelphia Eagles have placed starting left guard Landon Dickerson on injured reserve after he disclosed playing through discomfort during Sunday’s victory over Washington. Meanwhile, Minnesota’s Kyler Murray suffered a concussion in his team’s win over Green Bay, casting serious doubt over his availability for Week 2.
On a brighter note, New England running back TreVeyon Henderson is poised to resume practice, while Los Angeles Chargers receiver Ladd McConkey seems to have escaped a serious injury.
Here is the latest NFL injury news from Monday.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray departed Sunday’s season opener against Green Bay following a violent head impact while sliding. He has been placed in concussion protocol, leaving his Week 2 status in serious uncertainty.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed Monday that Murray remains in concussion protocol. The coach declined to provide a timeline for his return against Chicago, stating the team will continue monitoring his condition throughout the week.
Murray had a difficult outing in his Vikings debut, tossing an interception on the opening possession before exiting after the third drive with a concussion. His return timeline remains uncertain.
If Murray fails to clear protocol in time, Carson Wentz is expected to start, with J.J. McCarthy as the backup. Wentz delivered a strong performance in his previous start, throwing three touchdowns after replacing an injured Murray.
Philadelphia will be without a key starting offensive lineman for at least a month. The Eagles have placed left guard Landon Dickerson on injured reserve with a knee injury, sidelining the three-time Pro Bowler for a minimum of four games.
Dickerson battled through discomfort in Sunday’s 24-22 victory over Washington, later admitting on 94 WIP that he had been playing injured, which compromised his performance.
“I played terribly yesterday,” Dickerson said. “I was a complete liability, and that was my fault. I knew I shouldn’t be out there until I felt healthy. A few weeks ago I got rolled up on in practice; I thought it would improve as the week went on, but it didn’t.”
Dickerson underwent imaging on Monday before the team confirmed injured reserve as the course of action. He later characterized the injury as a bone bruise.
“Bone bruising doesn’t really heal if you keep banging it around,” Dickerson said. “It’s one of those injuries where you have to shut it down and rest. I’m optimistic it won’t linger once I’m off injured reserve.”
The move extends a troubling series of lower-body injuries for the 27-year-old, who underwent meniscus surgery last August and admitted he likely returned too soon.
With Dickerson sidelined, second-year lineman Drew Kendall is the frontrunner to start at left guard, though rookie Willie Lampkin could also see action.
The New England Patriots are reeling from a tough Week 1 loss to Seattle, but offensive reinforcements may be approaching. Despite receiving room injuries, running back TreVeyon Henderson could return by Sunday.
Head coach Mike Vrabel announced Monday that Henderson will return to practice this week, an encouraging development given he hasn’t practiced since August 24 during training camp.
With star wide receiver A.J. Brown on injured reserve, restoring an explosive playmaker like Henderson to the mix is vital for the offense.
The Patriots offense managed just 10 points in the loss to Seattle. If Henderson isn’t cleared for Sunday, Rhamondre Stevenson will likely shoulder a heavy workload once again.
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey left Sunday’s game with a chest injury after taking a hit in the middle of the field and did not return. Head coach Jim Harbaugh updated reporters Monday, describing the injury as a rib issue and labeling him day-to-day.
McConkey’s availability against Las Vegas remains uncertain, though he appears to have avoided landing on injured reserve.
While the exact nature of McConkey’s rib injury remains unclear, he had posted a strong performance before exiting against Arizona.
McConkey had posted five receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown before leaving.
Should McConkey miss time, Quentin Johnston, Tre Harris, and rookie Brenen Thompson are expected to fill larger roles this weekend.
