In today’s NHL rumors, the Detroit Red Wings’ situation with Simon Edvinsson takes center stage as the defenseman reportedly prefers a trade. Meanwhile, Elias Pettersson is showing signs of a potential bounce-back for the Vancouver Canucks, and the Ottawa Senators are facing early defensive injury challenges.
The Senators, who relied heavily on their depth to reach the playoffs last season, are already missing key pieces from their blue line for the new campaign.
Edvinsson Prefers Trade Over New Contract
The situation surrounding Simon Edvinsson initially took a backseat to Dylan Larkin’s trade request, but as the regular season approached, the focus shifted back to the young defenseman.
There were initial hopes for a short-term contract agreement, but those discussions stalled following the removal of Steve Yzerman as general manager. The Red Wings took considerable time to name an interim general manager, leaving contract negotiations in limbo.

Throughout the offseason, there was little progress on a deal, though optimism remained as Edvinsson reported to camp. However, as negotiations stalled, the defenseman returned to Sweden to practice with Frolunda in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).
According to reports, Edvinsson’s preference is now to be traded rather than sign a new contract. With recent market benchmarks like Zeev Buium’s $9.38 million annual salary, Edvinsson could be seeking a deal with an eight-digit annual value.
The league is always more compelling when a star player like Elias Pettersson is performing at an elite level. After producing 191 points over a two-season span, Pettersson’s output dropped to just 96 points over the subsequent two years. Such a rapid decline from superstar status is rare in the modern NHL.
This timing proved difficult for the Canucks, whose rebuild coincided with Pettersson’s decline. Having sold off key assets like Quinn Hughes, J.T. Miller, and Conor Garland, Vancouver struggled to find a suitable trade package for the forward. However, Pettersson has started the new season strongly, recording two goals and five points in his first three games, while leading the league with 16 hits.
While a hot three-game start does not define a season, a revitalized Pettersson could significantly increase his trade value. The Canucks could either capitalize on this momentum to acquire a strong package of players, picks, and prospects, or retain him to accelerate their rebuild, given his youth and high potential.
Sanderson, Zub Injured for Senators
The Ottawa Senators pushed for a playoff spot in the final weeks of the 2025-26 season by utilizing almost their entire defensive depth. Now, in the early stages of the 2026-27 season, the team is already without its top defensive pairing.
Artem Zub suffered a lower-body injury in Game 1 of the playoffs against the Carolina Hurricanes and remains sidelined with no set timeline for a return. Additionally, Jake Sanderson was injured during training camp and left the season opener after just four minutes of ice time, though the injury is not believed to be serious.
Despite the lack of severity in Sanderson’s case, being without two of their top defensemen forces the Senators to explore the trade market. The team has been linked to defensemen like Rasmus Ristolainen and Colton Parayko, and with Edvinsson seeking a trade, Ottawa may consider adding another puck-moving option to their roster.
The Senators’ ability to lean on their depth from last season will be crucial. If their depth players can continue to perform effectively, the front office can make more measured, rational decisions rather than forcing a panic trade.
