“I suppose it is there. No one likes to lose a final. I’ve done it twice, so I know all about it. But I think what comes first is representing the Black Caps and New Zealand well. So you’ve got a group of players who are always trying to do that first. Of course, if you manage to secure a few wins at home, that would be great,” Walter was reported by The Times.
The coach underscored how vital it is for the team to reunite as a single unit following the World Cup campaign. It marks the first occasion since the tournament that the vast majority of the former squad have concluded together, and Walter stresses the importance of concentrating on immediate objectives rather than extending vision toward distant milestones.
“But taking care of the small steps between now and later is perhaps the most critical. There is excitement among the players to represent once more—something they have awaited for many after the World Cup—it is their first collective departure since that event with most original squadmates leaving at the same time,” Walter added.
Walter made clear that while the World Cup outcome remains part of the discussion, it is not the primary focal point in the coaching staff’s strategic planning.
