CSK Official Confirms MS Dhoni’s Role in Zaheer Khan’s Head Coaching Appointment

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are entering a new era ahead of IPL 2027, appointing former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their new head coach. This transition concludes Stephen Fleming‘s long tenure with the franchise and raises questions regarding the decision-making process.

A major topic of discussion has been the alleged involvement of MS Dhoni in Zaheer’s selection. CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan has now verified that Dhoni participated in the decision-making process, putting an end to the speculation.

Was MS Dhoni involved in Zaheer Khan’s appointment as CSK head coach?

Kasi Viswanathan stated that CSK’s cricket management made the decision, with Dhoni contributing to the discussions.

Viswanathan noted that the management sought Zaheer due to his vast cricket and IPL background. He further confirmed Dhoni’s involvement in the final decision.

Dhoni proposed Zaheer’s name, which owner Rupa Gurunath and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad agreed upon as the right fit for the role.

“The cricket management took this decision. They wanted Mr. Zaheer Khan as the head coach based on his experience. He has played over 100 games in IPL and was an all-round player.

“They preferred that he would be a good option for them and we abided by what the cricket management wanted. Definitely, he (MS Dhoni) was part of the decision when this was taken. Without his advice, we don’t do anything,” Viswanathan was quoted by IANS.

This clarification is significant because Dhoni continues to be an influential figure within CSK even after stepping down as captain.

Why did CSK choose Zaheer?

Zaheer brings substantial playing and IPL experience to the role.

The former left-arm fast bowler played 100 IPL matches, taking 102 wickets. He represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Mumbai Indians (MI), and Delhi Capitals (DC).

Post-retirement, Zaheer transitioned into coaching and mentoring. He served with Mumbai Indians as Director of Cricket Operations and Head of Global Development before joining Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as a mentor.

This background provided him with expertise in player development, recruitment, and franchise operations.

CSK management also emphasized Zaheer’s work with young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, as a key reason for his selection.

Zaheer’s appointment ends an 18-year association between Fleming and CSK.

Fleming led the team since 2009 and was part of five IPL title-winning campaigns. His exit followed a challenging period where the franchise missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons.

CSK searched for a replacement, with several names linked to the vacancy before officially confirming Zaheer.

This appointment also signifies a shift in coaching direction, transitioning from a highly experienced overseas head coach to an Indian coach with significant IPL and international experience.

Zaheer gets complete control over CSK’s support staff

Another key detail regarding Zaheer’s appointment is the authority he will hold over his coaching team.

Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that Zaheer will select his support staff. CSK’s current setup includes Mike Hussey, Sridharan Sriram, Rajiv Kumar, Eric Simons, and James Foster.

This allows Zaheer to construct a coaching framework aligned with his methods and priorities heading into the 2027 season.

His immediate duties will involve collaborating with the franchise on squad planning, player retention, and recruitment ahead of the upcoming auction.

Zaheer’s first head-coaching assignment

Despite his extensive experience as a player, mentor, and cricket administrator, CSK will be Zaheer’s first head-coaching role.

His task is substantial. The franchise enters IPL 2027 aiming to rebuild momentum after three consecutive missed playoff appearances.

Zaheer will now have the chance to shape the team’s cricketing direction, while Dhoni’s involvement in his appointment bridges CSK’s established leadership and its new coaching era.
