Rays Clinch AL East Crown Ahead of Schedule, Dominating Baseball’s Toughest Division

Competing in what is widely regarded as baseball’s most grueling division, the Tampa Bay Rays emerged as the clear front-runners throughout the season.

The frugal Rays clinched their fifth AL East championship with a decisive 6-1 victory over the New York Yankees in the second contest of a day-night doubleheader Tuesday, as Drew Rasmussen delivered a masterful performance, allowing just one hit over 6 2/3 innings while Yandy Díaz connected on two two-run singles.

Tampa Bay claimed the AL East crown for the first time since 2021, surpassing that club by three days with the earliest division clinch in franchise history. The organization has also captured division titles during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign as well as in 2010 and 2008, the latter of which saw the team advance to the World Series and post the franchise’s first winning season.

“It means a lot,” Díaz said through a translator. “It’s a tough division — competitive nearly every single year. With this group, we understood that from day one, but we maintained belief in ourselves in every way. So here we are, celebrating at Yankee Stadium, and we’re thrilled to have gotten the job done.”

Tampa Bay (96-61) built a six-game cushion over the second-place Yankees (90-67) with five games remaining and will enter the American League playoffs as the No. 1 seed with home-field advantage. The Rays trail only the Milwaukee Brewers by two games for the best record in all of baseball and home-field advantage throughout the entire postseason.

The Rays have held first place since June 27 and spent 128 days atop the division ahead of the Yankees, who were deprived of Aaron Judge for 66 games due to a fractured right rib and a sore right calf — injuries expected to sideline the slugger for next week’s best-of-three Wild Card Series at home.

Tampa Bay initially seized first place following an 8-5 win over the Chicago White Sox on April 14 but surrendered the lead despite winning 13 of 18. The Rays reclaimed top spot after a 4-1 victory at Boston on May 10 and held firm until June 13, when they dropped seven of 13.

“We played really strong baseball up to this point,” said Rasmussen, who underwent elbow surgery in 2023. “We got off to a sluggish start in April, but to perform the way we have since early May, this group is different. We have a great time together. We love being together, and we’re trying to spend as much time as we possibly can.”

The Rays won their latest division title after returning to Tropicana Field, where they went 55-26 at home this season. Last year, Tampa Bay finished 77-85 overall and played home games at Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees’ spring training facility, because the dome roof at the Trop was torn off by Hurricane Milton in October 2024.

The Rays secured this AL East crown shortly after approving a financing plan that will enable them to construct a new stadium in Tampa, Florida, expected to open in 2029.

“Everything this franchise has endured, to have Tampa Bay on the chest tonight — the staff, the players, all of it — it’s truly special,” said president of baseball operations Erik Neander.

After closer Bryan Baker retired Yankees rookie George Lombard Jr. for the final out, the Rays shook hands on the field and shared hugs near the dugout to kick off their celebration.

As Yankees fans filed out of the stadium, Rays supporters migrated toward the visitors’ dugout, cheering for the newly crowned division champions. Once the celebration moved inside, the Rays sprayed bubbly and beer on one another while leaping and dancing to blaring music in their clubhouse.

“I’m very happy because this is a special group,” said third baseman and AL MVP candidate Junior Caminero. “When I went to spring training on the first day, I looked at this group and thought, ‘We’re a playoff team this year’ — and we did it.”

Rasmussen held the Yankees hitless until Heliot Ramos opened the seventh inning with a double to left field. The right-hander exited after walking Jazz Chisholm Jr., though Kevin Kelly retired Austin Wells following Lombard’s run-scoring single.

After collecting just three hits in a 2-0 loss in the opener, the Rays effectively sealed the division title with a three-run seventh inning in the nightcap. Taylor Walls opened with a bunt single and Díaz ripped a single to center field to build a 4-0 lead. Díaz added another two-run single in the ninth, marking his AL-leading 175th hit of the season.
