During his performance at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Wednesday night, Noah Kahan surprised the crowd by bringing out Chappell Roan for a duet of her track “California,” the opening song from her breakthrough debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.
Before they began, Roan acknowledged Kahan’s consistent support. “Noah always stands up for me, thank you,” she told the audience. “He’s a good person, for real.” Kahan then introduced the song, explaining its significance to him: “We’re gonna sing the first song I ever heard of Kayleigh’s, and it was the reason I fell in love with her music. I’m just really proud of her and grateful she would come sing with me.”
Kahan has championed Roan’s work for several years. In 2020, he cited her tender ballad “California” as a primary listen during quarantine. He also publicly defended her after she confronted a photographer for rude behavior at the VMAs.
