Noah Lyles, the reigning Olympic men’s 100-meter champion, announced on Friday that he will conclude his 2026 competitive season due to recurring injury complications, just days before the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest. The 29-year-old American sprinter, a four-time world 200m titleholder who also claimed the 100m world championship in 2023 at the same venue, will not compete in the September 11-13 meet.
“Unfortunately, I come with some not great news. Me and my coach have decided that we’re going to end my 2026 season,” Lyles shared via Instagram. The decision follows his victory in the 100m final at the U.S. Track and Field Championships in July, where he clocked 9.79 seconds—the fastest mark globally this year.
Initially, Lyles and his team believed the injury issues were minor. “It has been kind of complicated. We thought it was very simple. Unfortunately after running at USAs, we found out that I had a small strain, not very serious, and the rehab that we were putting together was going extremely well,” he explained. However, the strain exacerbated other underlying problems, complicating his ability to continue competing. “Unfortunately, because of the strain, it did cause some other things to flare up. And it has made it hard for me to continue broadcasting. We decided that we’ll just end the season here.”
Despite withdrawing from competition, Lyles confirmed he will attend the Budapest event to support fellow athletes. “I still do have a party to throw and things to do behind the scenes to help support the athletes just go out there and be the best people that they can be. I still think that this is going to be an amazing competition and I’m excited to watch that.”
Looking ahead, Lyles highlighted the significance of the upcoming seasons, stating, “Get ready for 2027, 2028, which are going to be humongous years.” The 2026 World Championships in Budapest will serve as a stepping stone toward the 2027 World Championships in Beijing and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
