Nobel Prize week begins Monday in Stockholm with the announcement of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine at the Karolinska Institute. The award marks the start of a six-day sequence honoring groundbreaking achievements across science, literature, and peace.

Last year’s medicine prize recognized immunologists Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for elucidating peripheral immune tolerance — a critical mechanism preventing the immune system from attacking the body’s own tissues. Their work provided foundational insights into autoimmune conditions including Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus.

The physics prize follows Tuesday, chemistry Wednesday, and literature Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded Friday in Oslo, with the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences concluding the announcements on October 12.

This year’s laureates will receive 12 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.2 million), a sum shared in cases of multiple recipients or organizational awards.
