Reigning world champion Lando Norris has the potential to mount a remarkable challenge for the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ title, according to Sky Sports F1’s David Croft. Norris secured McLaren’s first victory of the season in Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix, narrowing the gap to championship leader Oscar Piastri to 91 points as the series enters its summer hiatus, with 11 of 23 scheduled rounds completed.
The dominant performance following McLaren’s significant upgrade package at the Hungaroring has rekindled optimism that the Silverstone-based team has solidified its position among the frontrunners and could spearhead Norris’ resurgence in title contention.
Speaking on the latest episode of Sky Sports’ The F1 Show podcast, Croft emphasized the pivotal question of whether McLaren can sustain their recent momentum. “One of the key issues emerging from the summer break will be McLaren’s ability to maintain this level of competitiveness. Will they focus their resources on maximizing Lando Norris’ potential, and can this strategy yield victory consistently?”
While the Constructors’ Championship remains highly competitive, the title race remains within Norris’ reach, Croft noted. “I haven’t even started my holidays yet. I’m eager to dive back into racing at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort—I prefer a packed schedule over a lengthy break!”
Can McLaren Sustain Performance Gains?
Despite their strength, McLaren has faced challenges in maximizing their Mercedes-supplied power unit, which the Silver Arrows have optimized more effectively this season. The Hungaroring’s low-downforce demands may obscure whether these gains are replicable at more power-intensive circuits.
Croft highlighted parallels between Hungary’s technical layout and Monaco, where Mercedes excelled in early June. “McLaren’s improved understanding of power unit management suggests their advantage isn’t fleeting. While Mercedes were strong in Monaco, this could reflect driver-specific factors or Norris’ unique pace. Either way, McLaren’s progress makes them a genuine threat at circuits like Budapest.”
“McLaren’s upgrades have paid off. Their ability to challenge Mercedes at power-sensitive tracks signals a turning point. Lando’s pre-race rhythm and strategic execution indicated this was a deliberate and well-executed package,” Croft added.
Championship Dynamics Post-Summer Break
With 12 races remaining, the title fight intensifies following last season’s turnaround, where Verstappen closed a 104-point deficit to finish just two points shy of Norris’ victory. Sky Sports F1’s Bernie Collins emphasized upgrades and car optimization as the decisive factors ahead. “The focus will be on maximizing car performance and engine partnerships. With eight races completed and four remaining, the points spread is still wide open.”
Collins noted McLaren’s subtle edge over Mercedes in Hungary, though potential internal tensions could have distracted the Silver Arrows earlier in the season. “Three or four contenders—McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari—and maybe Red Bull—could all stay in this battle. The dynamics are fascinating to observe.”
