North Korea Vows Strong Retaliation Ahead of Upcoming US-South Korea Military Exercises

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea issued a threat on Friday of severe measures against the United States and South Korea prior to their scheduled military drills, characterizing the maneuvers as a provocative war rehearsal that exceeds the intensity of previous years.

This warning follows Pyongyang’s customary pattern of aggressive rhetoric preceding major U.S.-South Korean military exercises, leading analysts to suggest a potential increase in missile testing activity. Experts note that North Korea frequently utilizes these joint exercises as a justification for expanding its weapons capabilities and bolstering domestic support for leader Kim Jong Un.

The United States and South Korean militaries are scheduled to begin their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises this Monday, with officials stating the scope will remain consistent with previous years. The allies emphasized that the 11-day drills are strictly defensive and intended to maintain readiness against potential North Korean aggression.

In a statement released through state media on Friday, North Korea’s Foreign Ministry condemned the training as “a rehearsal for an aggressive war” that exacerbates regional instability.

“It is our consistent principle of ensuring security to respond to a new level of a threat with a new level of a deterrent,” the statement claimed. North Korea asserted it “will more clearly express its stance on the enemies to cope with any threats and challenges through the responsible and decisive exercise of the right to legitimate self-defense.”

Pyongyang further alleged that the upcoming drills would be “more serious” and “more dangerous” than last year’s, claiming they would involve the full military assets and war-fighting modes of the U.S. and South Korea—a claim not supported by the allied nations.

A U.S. military statement on Friday detailed that joint forces will practice operations in complex scenarios, including live-fire exercises to test precision targeting, maneuvers, wet gap crossings, and the distribution of prepositioned military equipment.

In the past week, neighboring countries detected two ballistic missile launches off the North’s eastern coast. While North Korea has not officially commented on these launches, external experts believe they were likely intended to protest the upcoming drills or to test new weapons systems.

Kim Jong Un has largely ignored diplomatic overtures from the U.S. and South Korea, focusing instead on expanding his nuclear arsenal since the collapse of diplomacy with the Trump administration in 2019. Analysts suggest Kim’s ultimate objective is to leverage his advancing nuclear program to secure significant U.S. concessions, such as the lifting of international sanctions.

In recent years, North Korea has deepened its cooperation with Russia, supplying troops and ammunition for the conflict in Ukraine in exchange for economic and military aid. Additionally, Pyongyang has been working to strengthen its relationship with China, its primary trading partner.
