Northern Ireland will face Ukraine at the Anton Malatinsky Stadium in Trnava, Slovakia, on Friday, 2 October, in a UEFA Nations League match.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Ukrainian national team has been hosting its home matches abroad. Venues have included those in the Czech Republic, Poland, Spain and Germany.
The Anton Malatinsky Stadium in Trnava is another venue that has hosted Ukraine, most recently for a 1‑0 victory over Malta in a Euro 2024 qualifier in June 2023.
UEFA allows Ukraine to select its home‑match venues as long as they meet the governing body’s regulatory standards.
The fixture with Northern Ireland is the third of Ukraine’s four matches in this international window. After a 1‑0 win in Hungary on Friday, they will face Georgia on Monday.
That is followed by the Northern Ireland game, then a home match against Hungary, also in Trnava.
In the November international window, Ukraine will host Georgia, with that match also scheduled for Trnava.
Ukrainian clubs have also become accustomed to playing abroad in recent seasons.
Defending league champions Shakhtar Donetsk will stage their Champions League home matches at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge this season.
