Liverpool Appoint Julian Ward as Sporting Director to Stabilize Football Operations

Liverpool have named Julian Ward as their new sporting director, confirming his return to the position he held during the 2022-23 season following Richard Hughes’ departure for Al-Hilal.

The 45-year-old, who previously served as Fenway Sports Group’s technical director, is widely expected to provide continuity amid recent leadership changes at the club.

Ward’s Return Marks Strategic Continuity for Liverpool

Ward’s appointment follows Hughes’ formal departure after informing Liverpool earlier in the year that he sought a new challenge. Hughes remained with the club through the summer transfer window before accepting a role at Saudi club Al-Hilal.

Bringing Ward back allows Liverpool to maintain institutional knowledge during a critical period of transition. His extensive experience includes a decade-long tenure at the club, beginning in 2012 with the recruitment department. He later established and managed the club’s loan pathways operation, served as assistant sporting director, and succeeded Michael Edwards in 2022 before returning to an FSG technical director role in 2023.

Ward’s familiarity with Liverpool’s recruitment framework, academy development strategies, and internal operational relationships positions him to collaborate directly with new head coach Andoni Iraola. His recent work reviewing over 25 European academies also reflects his engagement with cutting-edge development practices.

The appointment occurs amid broader FSG restructuring, including Edwards’ exit from a senior role earlier this summer. Ward’s second tenure as sporting director comes with enhanced strategic oversight compared to his initial appointment, which coincided with the conclusion of Michael Edwards’ tenure.
