Northern Ireland Teen Defeats 300,000 Contenders to Join Cheetah Girls Reboot Cast

The Cheetah Girls franchise is poised for a vibrant revival.

For countless Disney enthusiasts, those words evoke memories of one of the most successful musical film series of the mid-2000s.

More than two decades after the original Cheetah Girls debuted on screen, the beloved musical is being revived, with a fresh cohort of performers preparing to take the stage.

Among the new cast is a 16-year-old whose primary concern merely weeks ago was completing her GCSE examinations.

Sophie Lennon, hailing from Mayobridge in County Down, described her life as having “changed overnight” upon learning of the role she had “always dreamed of.”

Securing the part, however, was no simple feat.

The teen emerged victorious among 300,000 applicants from a worldwide casting call, earning one of only four highly sought-after positions.

Her audition tape was required to demonstrate proficiency in singing, dancing, and acting.

Lennon is hardly inexperienced in performance; she has appeared on both the British and American editions of Got Talent, performed in London’s West End, and represented Ireland at the 2022 Junior Eurovision Song Contest.

Yet, as a Northern Irish performer, she recognized that she was an unconventional pick for a role traditionally associated with American artists.

“I genuinely thought I had no chance,” she remarked.

“When the callback came roughly a week later, I was utterly astonished.”
