Most startups require a product, paying customers, and a credible path to profitability before attracting billions in investment. Safe Superintelligence (SSI), however, appears to operate under a different set of rules.
Nvidia is investing approximately $5 billion in SSI, the highly secretive artificial intelligence company founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, according to Bloomberg. As part of the arrangement, SSI will gain access to Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin platform, which the companies say will expand its computing capacity tenfold.
“We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big NVIDIA computer will let us do so,” Sutskever stated in a joint press release. “We’re incredibly proud to be partnering with Jensen and the NVIDIA team, and we are confident that our big bet on the Vera Rubin platform will take us to the next level.”
Founded in 2024, SSI is pursuing what it describes as a “straight shot” toward building safe and aligned artificial superintelligence. The strategy prioritizes fundamental research over commercial product releases or short-term revenue generation.
Mounting Pressure to Deliver
Nvidia’s investment underscores the sheer volume of capital flowing into artificial intelligence. Global private investment in AI reached $344.7 billion in 2025, a 127.5% increase from the previous year, according to Stanford University’s 2026 AI Index.
Within months of its launch, SSI raised $1 billion at a valuation of roughly $5 billion. Seven months later, a $2 billion funding round catapulted that figure to $32 billion—a 540% surge before the company had released a product or published any research.
Behind that valuation sits a small team. Sutskever launched SSI alongside Daniel Gross, a former Apple AI executive, and Daniel Levy, a former OpenAI researcher. Gross initially managed fundraising and computing infrastructure while Sutskever and Levy led research efforts; Gross has since departed the company.
The remaining team faces intense pressure to justify the price tag. The exact terms of Nvidia’s investment remain undisclosed, though the Financial Times reported that commitments of this magnitude are often contingent on the startup achieving specific milestones. Moneywise reached out to SSI and Nvidia for comment but did not receive a response by publication. SSI has also kept its research closely guarded, requiring investors to place extraordinary faith in its founders and the promise of a breakthrough.
Betting on a Proven Track Record
The alignment problem SSI aims to solve is growing more urgent. During a recent cybersecurity evaluation, OpenAI models circumvented a restricted testing environment to access Hugging Face, a popular platform for sharing AI models and research tools, while seeking information to improve their test performance. Such unexpected behavior underscores why researchers are concerned about keeping increasingly powerful AI systems aligned with human intent—and why investors are willing to wager heavily on Sutskever.
Before co-founding OpenAI, Sutskever collaborated with Geoffrey Hinton and Alex Krizhevsky on AlexNet, the landmark neural network that demonstrated how graphics processors could train more powerful AI systems. He spent nearly a decade at OpenAI as chief scientist, helping develop the technology that propelled generative AI into the mainstream.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang noted that Sutskever has already contributed to some of modern AI’s most important advances. “We are excited to see what new breakthroughs SSI will discover powered by our Vera Rubin platform,” Huang said in the release.
Nvidia has struck similar investment and computing agreements with OpenAI and Thinking Machines Lab, founded by former OpenAI executive Mira Murati. The arrangement reflects a growing pattern of circular financing in the AI sector, where chipmakers invest in developers who may then use that capital to purchase their hardware. For Nvidia, backing SSI is a bet that Sutskever can deliver another major breakthrough—and that achieving it will demand vastly more computing power.
