New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has announced a trial of the single-ball rule for the opening five rounds of the 2026-27 Men’s One-Day Ford Trophy, beginning October 28. This experimental approach aims to enhance bowling opportunities and reintroduce reverse swing in the latter stages of innings.
Traditionally, two new balls are used until the 34th over, after which teams choose one ball to continue with for the remainder of the 50-over innings. Under the new trial, a single ball will be utilized throughout all 50 overs, potentially increasing the challenges for batsmen as the match progresses.
Will Young of Central Stags expressed enthusiasm for the change, stating, “It adds a really interesting dynamic to the game and to the format. I quite like the idea of trialing the single ball and bringing back the art of getting the ball to reverse swing.”
The format change is expected to alter batting strategies during the power play and death overs, as players adapt to a ball that may behave differently throughout the innings. Young noted, “With the ball doing a bit more at the back end of the innings, it will challenge the batters to figure out different ways to generate a strike rate.”
This rule was previously used in international cricket until 2011 when the ICC adopted the two-new-ball approach. The trial will be reviewed after the first five rounds to determine whether to continue the experiment or revert to the standard format for the remainder of the season.
The Ford Trophy opens with Auckland Aces facing Canterbury in Auckland, while Central Stags take on Northern Districts in Nelson. A Wellington Firebirds vs Otago Volts match originally set for October 28 has been postponed to October 29 due to flight disruptions. These trials serve as preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup, providing valuable insights into how different playing conditions might affect gameplay strategies.
