New Zealand Dollar (NZD) advances on Thursday, trading near 0.5730 against the US Dollar (USD), reflecting a 0.56% gain. The NZD’s upward momentum follows the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s (RBNZ) more hawkish-than-anticipated policy move, which reinforced its commitment to controlling inflation. The central bank raised the Official Cash Rate by 25 basis points to 2.5% in July and signaled that further tightening may be required to bring inflation sustainably back to its 2% target. Projections indicate inflation will peak at 3.9% in Q2 before gradually easing toward the midpoint by mid-2027.
However, external factors are tempering the NZD’s rally. China, New Zealand’s largest trading partner, reported a sharper-than-expected decline in inflation, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising just 1% year-on-year in June—below the earlier 1.2% reading. Monthly inflation fell by 0.3%, more than expected, signaling softer price pressures that could dampen demand for the NZD.
Simultaneously, heightened US-Iran tensions are bolstering safe-haven demand for the USD, creating headwinds for the NZD/USD pair. Escalating geopolitical uncertainties are likely to cap near-term gains, as investors prioritize dollar strength amid widening risks.
