Obama Presidential Center Opening Raises Contrast With Trump’s Cultural Approach Through Star-Studded Attendance
The opening of the Obama Presidential Center on Thursday featured a star-studded lineup, including U2’s Bono, Bruce Springsteen, John Legend, and Jennifer Hudson, who performed the National Anthem.
Among the attendees, celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks, David Letterman, Stephen Colbert, and Conan O’Brien highlighted Hollywood’s long-standing support for the Obamas. Sara Sidner, reporting for CNN, noted, “A-listers all over the place.”
The event underscored a stark contrast with the current administration’s cultural strategy. While Obama leveraged high-profile artists for White House events and campaigns, Donald Trump has turned to UFC matches, country music, and a Kennedy Center takeover. A National Mall concert series, initially planned for next week, saw many artists withdraw over partisan concerns, replaced by a Trump rally featuring Lee Greenwood.
Former presidents and their spouses—George and Laura Bush, Joe and Jill Biden, Bill and Hillary Clinton—were present, while Donald Trump was notably absent.
Throughout the ceremony, efforts were made to draw a deliberate contrast with Trump’s policies, though his name was not mentioned.
“No one has a right to sit in judgment of who is American enough,” First Lady Michelle Obama stated.
