Rothesay County Championship, Division One, The Kia Oval, Kennington (day two)
Nottinghamshire 184 & 147-3: Slater 37, Clarke 37*; Worrall 2-18
Surrey 162: Thomas 48, Burns 44; Stone 6-44
Notts (3pts) lead Surrey (3pts) by 169 runs with seven second-innings wickets remaining
Outstanding fast bowling by Olly Stone, who claimed 6-44, placed champions Nottinghamshire firmly in control after two days against Surrey at The Oval.
Surrey collapsed from 75-2 to lose their last eight wickets for just 87 runs, finishing at 162 and conceding a first-innings deficit of 22.
Nottinghamshire mounted an impressive recovery after slumping to 104-8 on day one. Strengthening their position during a lengthy evening session of 45 overs, they reached stumps at 147-3, establishing a commanding lead of 169 runs.
While pitches at The Oval traditionally favor batting on days three and four, Surrey will need to strike early on Saturday to have any chance of turning the tide in this high-quality contest between the last two County Championship winners.
Entering the match with a five-point advantage at the top of the table, Nottinghamshire has strengthened its lead thanks largely to Stone’s exceptional performance throughout the day.
The 32-year-old, making his final Test appearance on this ground less than two years ago, delivered a consistently hard length across three spells from the Vauxhall End. His bowling regularly challenged both edges of the bat and troubled batsmen with occasional steep bounce.
Surrey initially appeared well-positioned after the early dismissal of nightwatchman Matthew Fisher, who was trapped lbw by Brett Hutton swinging the ball into his pads.
Rory Burns timed the bowling effectively, punishing Hutton with successive boundaries including a beautiful straight drive, while he and Adam Thomas carefully negotiated the new ball.
Thomas received generous help along the way, dropped by wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne on 21 and by Freddie McCann at second slip on 29, both chances off the unfortunate Hutton.
Their partnership reached 59 before Burns offered a loose upper-cut to deep backward point, allowing Stone to seize the initiative for his team.
In the same over, Ollie Pope – recalled after missing England’s First Test – was squared up for a five-ball duck.
Josh Blake, standing in for the injured Ryan Patel, prevented a hat-trick with a boundary to third man, but Stone maintained his momentum, striking twice more in the same over.
The determined Thomas, top-scoring with 48, was eventually bowled through the gate by a delivery that jagged back, while debutant Mahipal Lomror edged his first ball to slip, giving Stone his fifth wicket.
Dillon Pennington replaced Stone and immediately removed Ben Foakes, who had batted resolutely for 48 balls making 12, with a delivery that straightened. He then dismissed Jordan Clark for four.
Blake was caught behind propping forward to left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White, whose first-innings 76 now appears increasingly valuable. Stone returned to claim his sixth wicket when he bowled Tom Lawes (18) with another delivery that nipped away off the seam.
Surrey needed early breakthroughs and Dan Worrall delivered in his third over when captain Haseeb Hameed misjudged the line and lost his off-stump for four.
Ben Slater and McCann carefully added 49 for the second wicket, but McCann (22) was caught behind via an inside edge off Fisher.
Worrall returned for a second spell and produced a magnificent delivery to remove Slater for 37, the ball angling in on middle and leg-stump before nipping off the seam to find the outside edge.
Joe Clarke and Jack Haynes safely negotiated the final 20 overs, ensuring Stone’s earlier heroics were not in vain through an unbroken partnership of 70.
