Matt Peet’s squad capitalised on a run of handling mistakes by the visitors to outpace them early, building a 20‑point advantage by half‑time and then preserving the lead with a key interception by Jai Field after the hour mark.
The timing and scale of their drive to the front of the table are a warning to the squad that has led the competition for so long – notably Leeds – who will feel the pressure as they head to York on Sunday.
Wakefield suffered a fourth consecutive defeat after they were denied an opening try when Oliver Pratt’s pass to Max Jowitt ended with a knock‑on. The Tigers then edged level on a rare error from Bevan French, who threw a forward pass that fell on the sideline to give Zach Eckersley a touch‑down.
Wigan didn’t let the opportunity pass, turning two of Wakefield’s handling errors into three tries in the next ten minutes and continuing to extend their advantage.
French was punished for a careless pass by Jowitt when he powered over the line, scoring first. Six minutes later, Kian McDermott delivered a superb pass that allowed Liam Marshall to finish in the corner for a second try. A handling error that led to a penalty pass gave Peet’s men a further score as Adam Keighran kicked and a penalty secured the gapped interval.
Wakefield, however, showed resilience in the second half and raced to narrow the deficit at the 52‑minute mark when Jake Trueman’s strategic kick slipped past French, enabling Corey Hall to cross the line.
While Trinity added pressure on with a penalty and a repeated set, Hall’s off‑target flick sent Jowitt over the line, ensuring Wakefield’s failed final attempt. Mike McMeeken’s spill created a sliding opportunity that saw Jai Field dash across the full length of the field to register Wigan’s fourth try. A late gesture from Wakefield’s Ky Rodwell made the margin more respectable.
