Georgia’s Golden Isles: A Premier Golf Destination Steeped in History<\/TITLE>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph first">Wealthy families of the Gilded Age could afford to vacation wherever they desired.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Their destinations frequently included the Georgia coastline.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, the islands draw a new affluent crowd — families such as the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, Carnegies, and Morgans — who come to escape winter, avoid the limelight, fish, sail, bicycle, and, of course, play golf.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over a century later, the Golden Isles continue to be recognized as one of America’s premier golf destinations, boasting a concentration of distinguished courses that span classic Golden Age designs to contemporary championship layouts. Notable courses include those at Sea Island and St. Simons Island, as well as the recently restored Great Dunes on Jekyll Island, a celebrated Walter Travis creation.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To experience the region personally, GOLF.com spent a long weekend exploring the islands with the St. Andre Golf team — an Instagram‑famous collective known for its comedic sketches. Supported by Johnnie‑O, we made our best effort to blend in.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our itinerary began at Sea Island Resort, where we played the historic Plantation Course — dating to the 1920s and later renovated by Davis Love III and his brother Mark — before heading to Jekyll Island for a round on the revitalized Great Dunes.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Golf was just one aspect of the experience. We also took part in Gilded‑Age themed activities, cruised the Intracoastal in search of dolphins, enjoyed fresh seafood, and, as is customary, visited Southern Soul, a renowned barbecue joint that has become a local institution alongside the courses.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Golden Isles continue to attract affluent visitors, including numerous PGA Tour professionals. Yet despite the luxury, the area retains its relaxed, salty‑air atmosphere.</p>
