One Dead, 11 Missing After Mudslide Hits Eastern China Amid Tropical Storm Rains

BEIJING — A mudslide struck a village in Suichuan County, Jiangxi province, early Saturday, killing one person and leaving 11 others unaccounted for after days of relentless rain linked to Tropical Storm Saudel.

Rescue teams were dispatched immediately, evacuating residents to higher ground. One victim was recovered dead, while two others were pulled out alive and reported to be in stable condition, according to a statement from local authorities.

Typhoon Saudel made two landfalls in Zhejiang Province on Aug. 28 before a third landfall as a tropical storm in neighboring Fujian Province on Thursday, state news agency Xinhua reported.

In Fujian, heavy rainfall over several days caused widespread flooding. Local officials reported that a number of residents were missing after a dike breached in Huating Town, Putian city, collapsing more than 100 homes and submerging entire neighborhoods.

As of Friday night, approximately 600,000 residents had been evacuated from at‑risk coastal and inland areas in Fujian, Xinhua said.

State broadcaster CCTV footage showed streets turned into rivers, with rescue crews using inflatable boats to reach stranded residents.
