Oscar Piastri Indicates No Immediate Contract Talks After Lando Norris’ Long‑Term Extension

Oscar Piastri has insisted there is “no rush” to begin contract negotiations with McLaren, despite renewed speculation about his long‑term future with the team.

The comments come after McLaren confirmed a multi‑year extension for teammate Lando Norris, binding him to the team through the end of 2030.

Piastri’s future had been uncertain earlier this year when rumours linked him with a move to McLaren from Red Bull in place of Max Verstappen. Those reports were later revealed to be a negotiating tactic by Verstappen’s camp, which ultimately opted to stay with Red Bull.

Speaking to reporters at Monza, Piastri responded to questions about his contractual status with a concise statement: “I’m good for now.”

He explained that his existing contract extends “for a while,” meaning there is no urgency to discuss new terms. Piastri added that Norris’s extension did not take him by surprise, noting the teammate’s recent championship win and the team’s double constructors’ title. “We have a lot of the right pieces here, and while this season has been tougher, we’re finding our footing again and fighting for victories. It’s good for the team to have that stability.”

Piastri originally signed with McLaren for the 2023 season, but his deal would have expired at the end of 2024. Instead, he secured a “multi‑year” extension early last year that is understood to run at least until the conclusion of 2028, giving him ample time to evaluate his options.

Norris, who debuted with McLaren in 2019, recently finalised a new multi‑year contract believed to keep him with the team through 2027.

Piastri noted that Norris’s extended deal does not significantly impact his own negotiations, although he acknowledged the benefit of stability for both drivers. He pointed out that long‑term contracts often contain flexibility clauses for both parties. “Even a two‑year deal’s not that short, but a one‑year deal… it’s nice to have certainty,” he remarked, emphasizing that such agreements reflect a mutual commitment to work together.
