Both the Oura Ring 5 and Apple Watch Series 12 track essential health metrics such as sleep patterns, activity levels, estimated calorie expenditure, and heart rate variability. They also monitor menstrual cycles, though Oura highlights advanced insights for women’s health, including pregnancy and menopause tracking. Each device provides Readiness scores, helping users optimize workout intensity based on their current physiological state.

The devices diverge significantly in functionality. The Series 12 features a touchscreen available in 42mm and 46mm models, with the larger size costing $50 more. Powered by Apple’s S11 processor and 64GB storage, it handles tasks like Apple Pay, notifications, and trail navigation without requiring an iPhone. Cellular models (starting at $500) enable online access without Wi-Fi, whereas the Oura Ring 5 relies entirely on smartphone connectivity, requiring users to check data or adjust settings via the app. Notably, Oura is phasing out its web interface entirely.

Platform compatibility is another critical distinction. While both integrate with Apple Health, only the Oura supports Android’s Health Connect, appealing to users of Google, Samsung, or Motorola devices. Apple Watch Series 12 requires an iPhone 11 running iOS 17 or later, making it a less suitable choice for non-Apple users.

In fitness tracking, the Series 12 outperforms the Oura. While Oura auto-detects activities and stores data in its app, its accuracy can be inconsistent, and real-time metrics are inaccessible without a phone. The Watch, though requiring manual workout starts, delivers live stats directly on the wrist, including GPS location and running cadence—features Oura lacks unless paired with a phone. Additionally, smart rings like the Oura are impractical for weightlifters due to wear from equipment knurling.

Battery life is a clear win for the Oura Ring 5, lasting 6–9 days per charge, compared to the Apple Watch’s daily (or twice-daily) charging needs. This extended battery life minimizes data gaps and offers greater convenience for users prioritizing continuous tracking without frequent recharging.
