Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the night-time attack damaged energy infrastructure in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions, causing disruptions to the capital’s heating and water supply systems. He described the energy supply situation as “extremely difficult” in a Telegram post.
Klitschko added that the Pivnichnyi Bridge was damaged in the attack and closed to traffic in both directions while specialists assess the structure. He later shared video from the bridge showing damage to its surface, trolleybus overhead lines, and power lines. Five vehicles in a nearby car park were also damaged by the blast wave.
Five people, including a child, were wounded in the attack on the capital, he said.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned on Friday night of further strikes against Ukraine’s energy sector and civilian infrastructure, renewing calls for Patriot interceptor missile deliveries. He said Russia’s tactics aim to destroy power grids, transformers, and switchgear, leaving some regions with shortages even where generating capacity is sufficient.
The U.S. State Department recently approved a $2.1 billion package of Patriot PAC-3 interceptors for Kyiv, though Zelenskyy said delivery could take years. He has repeatedly urged allies to accelerate deliveries ahead of winter, stressing the missiles’ importance to Ukraine’s air defenses. Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s power grid during winter periods since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
The Patriot missile platform is among the world’s most advanced air defense systems and can defend against a range of threats, including aircraft and ballistic missiles.
In a Friday video address, Zelenskyy said he had also spoken with the team managing Ukraine’s deep strike campaign against Russia and warned that Moscow would “get our response.”
