Overton Delivers Decisive Blow as Rockets Secure Opening Hundred Victory

Facing fellow opening-round losers, Trent Rockets claimed their first victory of the competition by setting a new record for the highest successful chase at Trent Bridge in The Hundred.

Ben Duckett was the architect of the win, smashing an aggressive 47-ball 75 to move him to third on The Hundred’s all-time run-scoring list, surpassing Liam Livingstone and Will Jacks. Craig Overton provided the finishing flourish at the death, securing victory with two deliveries to spare.

After Trent won the toss and elected to bowl, London Spirit’s top order seized the initiative. Lhuan-dre Pretorius blazed through a rapid-fire 24, while Dewald Brevis posted an innings-high 39 to sustain the scoring rate. James Rew and skipper Liam Livingstone also chipped in valuable runs. Despite building momentum toward an imposing 180, the Spirit’s total was trimmed by disciplined death bowling from the Rockets, ending their innings at 127 for 4 off 78 balls.

In reply, the Rockets were rattled early as David Willey dismantled the dangerous Finn Allen for a duck. Tom Banton quickly settled in, steering a crucial 72-run stand alongside Duckett in just 41 overs. Livingstone displayed shrewd tactical awareness, using Willey to bowl the imposing paceman cheaply. AJ Tye then struck, finding Banton at point, before James Coles had Duckett comfortably caught. Jamie Overton continued the pressure by dismissing Tim David, leaving the home side stagnant at 127 for 4.

Sam Billings injected vital momentum with a fearless display, reverse-sweeping and conventional-sweeping Adam Zampa for boundaries before dispatching Adam Milne to Brevis at point. Faced with 25 runs required from the final 10 deliveries, Craig Overton strode to the crease.

Overton commenced his knock by smashing his first delivery over the boundary for six, repeating the feat with his fourth ball—a strike off his brother Jamie—before sealing the win with a couple of quick singles to leave the Rockets victorious with two balls remaining.

Craig Overton, who struck 20 runs off just six balls to clinch the triumph against his brother, reflected afterward: “Jamie dismissed me last year, so I was determined to get some payback! I simply aimed to put the ball in the air with the favorable breeze. We wanted to make sure we stayed in with a legitimate chance, and Dad will certainly be pleased with how everything played out in the final moments.”
