ESPN’s “30 for 30” podcast revisits the critical discovery of a financial connection between Shohei Ohtani and an illegal bookmaking operation. Investigative reporter Tisha Thompson encountered a source in a dimly lit parking lot who provided encrypted documents linking Ohtani’s bank transactions to bookmaker Mathew Bowyer.
Thompson recounted receiving a phone containing time-sensitive images showing $1 million in transfers between Ohtani’s Bank of America account and Bowyer’s operations. The documents revealed two $500,000 payments on September 14 and October 2, 2023, both using identical banking details.
Thompson later revealed her realization while reviewing her notes: “I just saw wire transfers from Ohtani’s account – there’s his name attached.” This marked the first concrete link between the baseball star and gambling activity.
The story evolved rapidly when another source implicated Ohtani’s interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, who initially claimed Ozhtani had agreed to pay gambling debts. Mizuhara later admitted to orchestrating the fraud, illegally accessing Ohtani’s account to settle his own debts. Authorities confirmed Ohtani was a victim, not a participant.
Mizuhara was sentenced to federal prison for bank fraud, while Bowyer pleaded guilty to operating an illegal gambling ring. The Los Angeles Dodgers terminated Mizuhara’s role, and MLB concluded its investigation in 2024, stating Ohtani faced no wrongdoing.
The ESPN podcast includes a 90-minute recorded interview with Mizuhara conducted just before the initial report, preserving a rare firsthand account of the scandal’s origins. The narrative emphasizes how the initial parking lot exchange revealed critical financial ties that ultimately uncovered a sophisticated fraud scheme.
