ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have agreed to deepen their collaboration on national food security policy and nutrition initiatives.
This accord was established during a meeting between Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain and Anita Hirsch, WFP’s representative and country director.
Discussions centered on bolstering cooperation in food security, nutrition, climate resilience, and sustainable agriculture.
The parties committed to advancing joint efforts in post-harvest management, grain storage, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, food fortification, and digital solutions for building resilient food systems.
Both nations also pledged to fortify coordination with the Food and Agriculture Organization, International Fund for Agricultural Development, and other development partners to support the National Food Security Policy and catalyze sustainable food system transformation.
Welcoming the WFP delegation, the minister praised the organization’s enduring partnership with Pakistan and recognized its significant contributions to humanitarian assistance, nutrition, and food security initiatives.
He outlined that the government had initiated work on a comprehensive National Food Security Policy grounded in a holistic food systems approach.
The minister sought WFP’s technical expertise to integrate nutrition, digital innovation, and international best practices into the policy framework.
Mr. Hussain lauded WFP’s support for the Benazir Nashonuma Programme, along with its resilience-building and emergency response efforts, emphasizing that Pakistan highly values the organization’s continued partnership in bolstering food security and improving nutrition outcomes.
He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to collaborating closely with WFP to advance national food security priorities, enhance nutrition, and realize Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger).
Ms. Anita Hirsch welcomed the initiative and affirmed WFP’s full technical support for the policy formulation process. She highlighted WFP’s expertise in grain storage, post-harvest management, supply chain optimization, food fortification, and nutrition programmes.
