Palestinian Officials Condemn Israeli Minister Ben-Gvir’s Threats to Kill Detainee Hassan Salama

Footage of the national security minister taunting Hassan Salama in his cell has drawn sharp condemnation from Palestinian officials and groups.

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs has strongly condemned far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir following his release of social media footage in which he threatened to kill jailed Hamas figure Hassan Salama inside his prison cell.

“The footage published by Ben-Gvir demonstrates that degradation and depravity have reached their absolute peak,” Raed Abu al-Hummus, the head of the Palestinian Authority agency, stated in a release on Monday.

Conditions inside Israeli prisons constitute “organised terrorism,” he added.

Ben-Gvir uploaded the lengthy video post on X on Sunday, showing himself inside the cell of Salama, who has been held in Israeli custody for three decades.

Salama is currently serving multiple life sentences for his involvement in a series of Hamas-orchestrated attacks in 1996, which included bus bombings.

“I want to kill you. …. I want you executed,” Ben-Gvir told Salama while surrounded by Israeli security forces. According to the minister, the footage was recorded two weeks prior.

The Palestinian Prisoners Media Office denounced Ben-Gvir’s actions as “a cheap political and electoral stunt” ahead of Israel’s October 27 elections, describing it as a “cowardly act of bullying against a defenceless and handcuffed prisoner.” The office further asserted that Israeli authorities bear full responsibility for Salama’s safety and well-being.
