A week after being shot in his West Bank village, Fadi al‑Nassan’s death coincides with heightened settler violence

A 17‑year‑old Palestinian footballer who was a member of his nation’s youth national team died from a gunshot wound sustained during an Israeli settler attack on his West Bank village, officials and family members reported.
Fadi Hamdallah al‑Nassan, aged 17, was shot on July 11 and died from his injuries on Saturday.
His death has renewed focus on the growing violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers and soldiers against Palestinian communities throughout the West Bank, a territory Israel has occupied since 1967 and where settlement construction has expanded rapidly despite being illegal under international law.
Human rights organizations and the United Nations have characterized Israel’s West Bank activities as a system of apartheid.
Al‑Nassan was a player for Al‑Mughayyir Club and also a member of the Palestinian national youth team.
Dozens of mourners clad in black transported his body from the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah to his hometown of al‑Mughayyir for burial on Saturday.
The Palestine Football Association (PFA) reported that Israeli forces shot al‑Nassan in the thigh during the settler attack; his leg was later amputated, and he died from his injuries.
According to the association’s statement on X, the number of Palestinian sports martyrs since October 7 2023 has risen to 1,013, of which 568 are footballers.
His father, Hamdallah al‑Nassan, said his son had rushed to the scene after hearing women and girls screaming during the assault.
“He went to the site of the attack and was killed,” his father said.
“He was an excellent student, talented in sports, and loved football. Everyone adored him,” his mother, Hanan al‑Nassan, said.
Violence across the West Bank
On Saturday, Israeli settlers and security forces carried out two separate attacks in the occupied West Bank, setting fire to olive groves near Ramallah and completely destroying a family home near Nablus, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
The incidents occurred on the same day that Israeli forces raided homes in towns near Jenin, illustrating the near‑daily incursions and settler violence Palestinian communities endure.
In Deir Qaddis, west of Ramallah, Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition and tear gas at Palestinian farmers, igniting fires that spread through olive groves, WAFA reported.
Civil defence teams were blocked from reaching the scene, allowing the fire to spread further.
Near Nablus, a group of settlers set fire to a Palestinian family’s home in the town of Tal, completely destroying it, WAFA reported.
Israeli forces also raided homes in Yabad and Mithlon, near Jenin, which residents describe as an almost daily pattern of incursions and settler attacks.
