Following a weekend marked by some of France’s most severe civil unrest in recent years, Paris police implemented an overnight curfew on Monday across two central neighborhoods of the capital.
From 11 PM to 6 AM, residents and visitors are prohibited from entering or remaining in Place de la République and the Les Halles shopping district. Additionally, all public gatherings and demonstrations are banned after 8 PM.
Police maintained a strong presence at both locations on Monday evening, redirecting pedestrian traffic and conducting random identity checks. A helicopter equipped with a searchlight conducted multiple passes over Les Halles, while the affected areas remained calm throughout the night.
Epicenter of Civil UnrestThe measure comes at the request of Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, who instructed regional prefects to impose “very limited” and “localized” curfews in an effort to prevent further looting and restore public order.
