Dame Priti Patel was appointed to Badenoch’s shadow cabinet after finishing sixth in the leadership contest. She previously held senior positions in successive Conservative governments, most notably serving as home secretary for three years under Boris Johnson.
In a statement posted on X, she announced her departure: “It has been an honour to lead the Party’s foreign affairs team in Parliament over the past two years.
“I’m pleased to continue supporting Kemi and the Conservative Party in a new role strengthening our relationships with fellow conservatives and centre‑right parties around the world.”
Patel confirmed she would remain the MP for Witham in Essex.
A reshuffle of the Conservative frontbench had been anticipated in the coming weeks, partly due to the forthcoming maternity leave of shadow energy secretary Claire Coutinho.
Senior party figures have recently sought to temper speculation about the future of shadow chancellor Sir Mel Stride, who some believe could be ousted in the upcoming changes.
However, certain insiders maintain that Badenoch may still opt to replace Stride.
Many in the party view Coutinho as a potential future shadow chancellor, having impressed colleagues with her performances in Parliament and the media.
Nonetheless, Badenoch is unlikely to appoint her to that post while she is on maternity leave.
The party leader must also fill the vacancy left by Sir James, who stepped down as shadow housing secretary to concentrate on a campaign for the London mayoral nomination.
He has yet to be selected as the party’s candidate for the May 2028 election and has not resigned as MP for Braintree.
