Veteran director Paul Feig, currently shooting the sequel to The Housemaid, has been tapped to direct the upcoming horror feature Detention.
Marking his first foray into horror, Feig, known for hits like Bridesmaids and the thriller A Simple Favor, will helm Detention. The plot, still under wraps, follows reuniting alumni who uncover a chilling secret.
Feig and producer Laura Fischer will oversee the project through Pretty Dangerous, alongside executive producers Michael Bay, Jason Blum, Brad Fuller, Cameron Fuller, Steven Schneider, Bea Sequeira, and Daniel Gold. The film is being developed under Blumhouse Atomic Monster, with Fuller originating the script that attracted Feig.
Although no studio has been confirmed yet, Universal is widely considered a strong contender given its existing partnership with Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
Detention‘s origins trace back to a spec script by screenwriter Daniel Gold, who recently sold Tough Guys to Amazon MGM Studios for Ryan Gosling and Will Ferrell to star and produce, and who has also been tapped to write Ride Along 3 for Universal.
No casting decisions have been announced for Detention, and Feig aims to make it his next project after completing The Housemaid’s Secret for Lionsgate.
Feig remains in a strong position following the unexpected $400 million global gross of The Housemaid, which earned far more than its $35 million budget. The upcoming The Housemaid’s Secret reunites him with star Sydney Sweeney and adds Kirsten Dunst to the franchise.
Feig is represented by CAA, Sloane Offer, and Lede Company; Gold is represented by CAA, Underground, and Ginsburg Daniels.
