Will ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Happen?

The game may not be fully afoot just yet, but Sherlock Holmes 3 has finally received a major update after more than a decade of delays and shifting release dates. An official statement from someone directly involved in the production confirms that the project is moving forward, and Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law may soon dust off their Victorian costumes.

Chris Brancato, credited as screenwriter for the long‑delayed third installment, announced an encouraging update on the future of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes saga. He noted that Downey Jr.’s schedule is extremely busy, but he has already written a draft of the screenplay.

‘I don’t know, that’s up to the movie gods,’ Brancato told The Direct. ‘Robert’s schedule is extremely busy, but I’m hopeful the project will move forward. We’ll have to wait and see how things develop.’

When asked if a completed script exists, Brancato replied clearly: ‘Oh, yes, I wrote a draft.’ Michael Panes, his co‑creator, added that the draft is very good.

Guy Ritchie remains hopeful that Sherlock Holmes 3 will be produced, noting that its realization depends on Robert Downey Jr.’s schedule aligning with his own.

In an interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub for In the Grey, Ritchie discussed whether his involvement in the upcoming Young Sherlock series signals the end of the Sherlock Holmes franchise or the potential for new entries.

‘I’d love to see it happen,’ Ritchie said. ‘I admire Downey and the two films we made together. It’s essentially a matter of syncing schedules. While the audience clearly wants the sequel, we also want it, but we’re waiting for the right moment. It’s remarkable that it hasn’t materialized yet.’

The Sherlock Holmes films directed by Ritchie feature Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, Eddie Marshall as Inspector Lestrade, Kelly Reilly as Mary Morstan, Mark Strong as Lord Blackwood, and Jared Harris as Professor Moriarty.
