Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has declared a snap general election after parliament rejected the housing relief measures advanced by his minority government.
Speaking on Monday, Sanchez confirmed that the vote will take place on November 29.
The legislative defeat on Friday represents the latest setback for the centre-left leader and followed mass protests across Spain concerning the housing crisis.
The government reported that more than 70,000 protesters participated in a housing demonstration in Madrid on Saturday.
Public anger had been escalating since late last month, when Marai del Carmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman, was evicted from her home of 70 years in Madrid after an international investment fund purchased the building and raised the rent.
