A major theme for the early stages of the 2026-27 Islanders season will be how consistently the team can approach Pete DeBoer’s vision on any given night.
DeBoer’s teams at their best are recognizable: they deny opponents access to the middle of the defensive zone, involve their defensemen in the rush, and sustain structured offensive possession. He also wants the power play to be versatile and for the squad to play with speed.
The approach has a proven track record. Over the past decade, teams coached by DeBoer have reached the conference finals more often than they have failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Wednesday night provided early glimpses of that identity. In the opening seven minutes, the final 10 minutes, and several shifts in between, the Islanders began to resemble the version DeBoer is trying to build. Depending on the advanced metrics used, they narrowly beat out opponents in expected goals. DeBoer is likely to treat that statistical edge as a useful measure of how quickly his team is adjusting.
