Phil Schiller, a longtime Apple executive, has stepped down from his role as the head of the App Store, with reports citing a combination of personal and strategic reasons for his departure.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Schiller will continue at Apple as a Fellow working on unspecified projects, but his decision was influenced by a desire to spend more time with his family and on philanthropy.
Another key factor appears to be Schiller’s wariness regarding the plans of new CEO John Ternus and services chief Eddy Cue to boost App Store margins and recurring revenue.
Apple’s management of the App Store, including its payment commission structure, has faced ongoing criticism from developers and has been involved in major lawsuits.
Gurman reports that while there was no significant conflict, Schiller believed that pursuing higher profits would exacerbate tensions with governments and developers, leading him to avoid involvement in the strategy.
