Leakers have assembled a playable version of the canceled Portal prequel F-Stop. Most of the assets originated from the massive 12-terabyte leak that surfaced in August. That release did not include the game’s source code or map data, but those final pieces reportedly appeared on the Valve Cut Content Discord this week, making it possible to piece together a nearly complete build.
Some dialogue and elements from F-Stop eventually made their way into Portal 2. The project differs sharply from the mainline Portal games, centering instead on a camera mechanic that lets players capture an item by photographing it and place it elsewhere using the resulting Polaroid-like images. It is comparable to Viewfinder in that respect.
The game is brief, with full playthrough videos clocking in at under an hour. That is hardly surprising: F-Stop was produced during Valve’s “Directed Design Experiments,” a three-month period in 2007 when the studio divided into five teams to develop experimental video game concepts.
