Was the loss ultimately attributable to the system itself?
Pocognoli has remained committed to his favored setup, utilizing three central defenders supported by two advanced wing-backs.
Early signs were mixed during last month’s scoreless draw against Slovenia, where the system struggled in the opening period before recovering in the second half, prompting praise for their aggressive, forward-moving approach.
Criticism was somewhat tempered after a 3-0 home loss to Switzerland due to Jack Hendry’s early dismissal, yet positive sentiment returned following a decisive 2-0 victory in North Macedonia.
However, those doubts have resurfaced.
Neither Halliday nor Crichton favors a back three, with the Rangers Women’s manager particularly worried about the exposure it creates defensively—a vulnerability Slovenia once again highlighted by targeting the areas behind the wing-backs.
Halliday, however, believes Pocognoli’s defensive transition is reasonable.
“Often, it resembles a back four, as one wing-back advances like a winger while the other tucks in to act as a full-back,” he explained.
His primary concern lies in attack: the absence of penetration and off-the-ball runs. “If you utilize that box midfield and commit so many players centrally, you must be capable of breaking through the middle of the pitch,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Miller questioned whether the available defenders are comfortable operating within a three-man defence.
“The two wing-backs are expected to push absolutely high up the field,” he stated.
“For my part, the three centre-backs feel exposed and lack familiarity with how to execute this system.
“He has had ample time to implement it, yet it was disjointed. It was unbelievably poor.”
