The match lived up to its billing as a heavyweight European showdown, with both teams locked in a tight midfield battle for long stretches. Portugal dominated possession and territory in the first half but struggled to penetrate Croatia’s disciplined defensive structure, while the Vatreni remained threatening on the counter-attack and from set pieces. At the interval, the score remained goalless despite flashes from Bruno Fernandes and a commanding midfield display from Luka Modrić.
Stoppage-Time Decider
The second half erupted into life. Croatia struck first through Ivan Perišić, capitalising on a rare lapse in the Portuguese defence, before VAR interventions and disallowed goals on both sides heightened the drama. Ronaldo then restored parity from the penalty spot during a frantic spell where momentum swung wildly, including a Mateo Kovačić effort that struck the post and several offside calls against Croatia.
Just as extra time loomed, Portugal found the decisive breakthrough deep into stoppage time. A cross from Rafael Leão was met by Gonçalo Ramos, who powered a header past Dominik Livaković to send Portugal into the last 16 in dramatic fashion, capping a breathless encounter between two sides separated by the finest of margins. VAR subsequently ruled out a late Croatian equaliser.
