According to Sky Sports F1’s Simon Lazenby, a move by Max Verstappen away from Red Bull would create turmoil in the Formula 1 driver market.
Sky Sports News reports that Verstappen’s representatives have begun discussions with McLaren, and Red Bull chief Laurent Mekies says the team must convince the Dutch driver that staying is the best option for 2027.
Verstappen is contracted with Red Bull until the end of 2028, but an exit clause could permit a transfer in 2027 if he falls outside the top two in the championship at the start of the summer break.
With three races left before the summer break, Verstappen sits seventh in the championship, 58 points behind second‑place George Russell, who is 40 points behind his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli.
In the latest episode of The F1 Show, Lazenby emphasized that Verstappen is pivotal: “If someone secures Max, the entire situation will become chaotic again.”

If Verstappen were to leave Red Bull, a vacancy would arise at one of Formula 1’s premier teams.
A potential exchange could see Oscar Piastri move to Red Bull in place of Verstappen, while Red Bull might also target Carlos Sainz from Williams or promote Britain’s Arvid Lindblad from Racing Bulls.
When asked on the grid before Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix whether Verstappen could join McLaren, team principal Zak Brown did not categorically dismiss the possibility.
Brown said he would be surprised if Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri left, noting that both are content at McLaren.
We have binding contracts, yet regardless, we are satisfied with our drivers and they are happy in their roles.
Even in the unlikely event of a bizarre incident, Verstappen’s four‑time world‑champion status would still apply.

Sky Sports F1’s David Croft observes that it is reasonable for Brown, as a team chief executive, to discuss potential driver movements.
He clarified that his remarks are not about wanting to replace Lando or Oscar, but as the head of a leading, defending constructors’ champion team, he must stay informed about the wider driver market.
He added that he would not have liked being in Oscar Piastri’s position, since a move for Max would likely push Oscar aside, given Lando’s recent world championship win.
He suggested that a straight swap could see Piastri move to Red Bull, filling the vacated seat.

Karun Chandhok noted that each party is simply carrying out their professional responsibilities.
Vermeulen’s role is to explore all possibilities for his client, while Brown’s role is to assess whether the sport’s top driver is available, a duty shared by every team principal.
He urged that any team principal, whether Zak, Fred Vasseur, or another, should speak with Vermeulen to learn the full story.
