On Wednesday, two significant earthquakes struck central Venezuela, the United States Geological Survey reported, warning that a large‑scale disaster with numerous casualties and substantial damage was probable.
Residents described the tremors as unusually powerful, shaking structures and cutting power across regions, including Caracas. Social‑media images revealed several buildings reduced to rubble, though officials had not yet confirmed any fatalities.
Venezuela possesses some of the world’s largest oil reserves, yet its industry has deteriorated due to aging infrastructure and U.S. sanctions. The nation also struggles with triple‑digit inflation, and in January the United States military took custody of former president Nicolás Maduro.
