Dagen McDowell warns that the new cost-of-living adjustment could exacerbate the Social Security fiscal crisis. She highlights how retirees may encounter a potentially 22% reduction in benefits by 2032 as the ratio of workers to retirees continues to decline.
American households have been navigating persistent inflation that has stayed well above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target since the pandemic, with grocery prices representing a significant challenge in recent years.
Recent Consumer Price Index (CPI) data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that overall food prices increased by 2.5% over the past year. Specifically, the food-at-home index rose 1.8% year-over-year, while the food-away-from-home index surged nearly twofold, reaching 3.5%.

“Consumers can also save through flexibility. When chicken is on sale instead of beef, or store-brand products offer significant discounts over national brands, making informed substitutions can yield meaningful long-term savings.” Smith added. “Bulking up on staple items may seem logical, but it only makes sense if household consumption patterns align with the shelf life of those products to prevent waste.”
