Pratt & Whitney, a business unit of RTX Corporation (RTX), has entered into a Production License Agreement with Hermeus, a venture-backed defense aviation company, to manufacture F100-PW-229 engines — one of the most widely deployed fighter propulsion systems in the U.S. military.
The F100 engine is currently used to power Hermeus’ Quarterhorse aircraft. With over 32 million flight hours logged, the engine has established itself as one of the most reliable and trusted fighter engines globally.
This agreement enhances the resilience of the U.S. defense industrial base by establishing a second qualified source for F100 engine production.
It also supports accelerated production of the Quarterhorse aircraft and increases domestic manufacturing capacity for combat-tested fighter engines to meet rising demand from military customers.
Hermeus will manufacture the engines using its agile, rapid-build production approach, aligning with Pratt & Whitney’s rigorous global standards for quality, safety, and facility readiness.
Earlier this year, Hermeus’ Quarterhorse aircraft successfully completed supersonic flight testing, marking the debut of the world’s first privately developed unmanned supersonic jet.
For over five decades, the F100 engine has powered the U.S. Air Force’s F-15 and F-16 fighter jets, earning a reputation for exceptional performance and long-term reliability.
