Half-Time: Manchester United 1-1 Ipswich
A moment of confusion preceded the opening goal for Ipswich that warrants closer inspection. As Leif Davis prepared for a throw-in, referee Craig Pawson began a visible five-second countdown, a measure enforced under new regulations this season to prevent time-wasting.
While Davis ultimately released the ball quickly, Harry Maguire appeared to believe the referee had already awarded the throw-in to Manchester United. Consequently, Maguire collected the ball and played it to Diogo Dalot to initiate the play.
Rather than awarding a free kick for what might have been interpreted as an inadvertent handball by United, Pawson ruled that the throw-in belonged to Ipswich. Davis immediately signaled for his teammates to advance.
This decision led to the Ipswich defenders crowding the Manchester United penalty area. Because they were positioned so far upfield, they were caught out of shape when United launched a rapid counter-attack.
