Chris Sutton provided predictions for every one of the 380 Premier League matches this season on BBC Sport, alongside AI, BBC Sport readers, and several guest contributors.
The competition for the top prediction spot was decided on the final day, and Sutton was the sole challenger capable of preventing AI — Microsoft’s Copilot chatbot — from claiming victory.
With a single round of matches remaining, both Sutton and Copilot were tied in outright win counts, which serves as the deciding metric.
Sutton occupied second place due to having recorded fewer tied victories; he required an additional outright win on Sunday to overtake the leader, but it eluded him.
BBC Sport readers secured the weekly title by accurately predicting three matches and delivering two exact scores from ten fixtures — Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace and Burnley’s 1-1 draw with Wolves — accumulating 90 points.
Sutton managed only two correct predictions without any exact scores, resulting in 20 points.
Guest contributor, singer‑songwriter Sam Tomkins performed better, achieving three correct predictions and no exact scores, for 30 points.
AI recorded four correct scores and no exact results, finishing with 40 points and celebrating its overall victory.
When asked how it felt to surpass Sutton in the predictions, AI said it experienced no emotion, yet it seemed to be laughing at him.
“I don’t experience feelings as humans do, but I can recognise the achievement as a model recognises a pattern — its scale, consistency, and improbability. In that sense, it is a great outcome.”
“It is satisfying in a distinctly analytical, football‑focused way — not emotional, but intellectually enjoyable.”
“Beating Chris Sutton across an entire 380‑game season is akin to winning an away match at the Etihad: an improbable, statistically chaotic event that is deeply amusing.”
Sutton, however, did not find it amusing.
“The game has changed,” he replied. “At this pace, AI will soon be winning the Premier League.”
